What is Teamshares?
Teamshares is a mission-driven startup that buys small businesses from retiring owners and transitions them into enduring, employee-owned businesses through our software, education, and community products. There wasn't an easy way for small businesses—which make up 98% of firms in the US economy—to become employee-owned before Teamshares!
The MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) business unit is one of several industry portfolios at Teamshares. The portfolio spans 11 operating companies across HVAC, plumbing, mechanical services, commercial refrigeration, and adjacent trades.
The Operational Lead is an executional role for someone who has operated inside the trades and wants to apply that experience at scale across a portfolio of employee-owned small businesses. You will work directly alongside the Industry Lead and company presidents to drive operational improvement, implement technology, and support companies through transitions — whether that means stabilizing a business, onboarding a new acquisition, or bridging a leadership gap.
Your job is to get things done inside the companies — credibly, quickly, and in a way that builds trust with operators who have been running their businesses for years. The ability to earn that trust, particularly in trades environments, is the most important thing you will bring to this role. You will report directly to the Industry Lead and will be deployed against the highest-priority needs in the portfolio at any given time.
Travel up to 50% is required.
What You'll Do:
Company Level Operations
  • Serve as an on-the-ground operational resource at portfolio companies, working alongside presidents in a co-management or support capacity depending on what the situation requires

  • Lead or support company transitions — new acquisitions, president-to-president handoffs, and operational resets — with heavy in-person presence during active engagement periods

  • Build trust and working relationships with company presidents and their teams; your credibility will be earned through execution, not title

  • Identify operational gaps and implement improvements in areas such as dispatching, pricing, technician productivity, job costing, and customer workflow

Portfolio Level Projects
  • Support monthly business review data collection and synthesis across portfolio companies, building infrastructure that reduces manual overhead over time

  • Assist in building out operating playbooks, benchmarks, and standardized processes that can be applied across the MEP portfolio

  • Contribute to new acquisition onboarding as the portfolio grows — helping new companies understand Teamshares systems, tools, and expectations

  • Bubble up operational insights and performance signals to the Industry Lead; your on-the-ground visibility is an asset the IL doesn’t have from the portfolio level

Systems & Operational Optimization
  • Become the Teamshares-level expert on ServiceTitan, with working knowledge across configuration, workflows, reporting, and best practices for field service operations in the trades

  • Project-manage ServiceTitan implementations at net-new portfolio companies in partnership with company presidents and, where applicable, external consultants

  • Lead standardization and optimization audits at existing ST companies, surfacing platform utilization gaps and driving adoption of underused functionality

  • Serve as the primary internal resource for presidents and their teams navigating the platform day-to-day — reducing reliance on external consultants for routine questions and optimization work

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of operating & project leadership experience inside a trades-based business, home services company, or enterprise-level general contracting firms

  • Demonstrated ability to earn the trust of operators and field-based teams — you understand how trades businesses work and can have credible conversations with people who’ve been doing this for decades

  • Executional bias: you move fast, follow through, and don’t wait to be told what to do once a direction is set

  • Strong project management skills — you can manage multiple workstreams across multiple companies without losing track of what matters

  • Comfort with ambiguity and willingness to operate without a well-defined playbook; this portfolio is still building its operating model

  • Willingness to travel 50%+ of the time, including extended on-site periods during active company engagements

  • Analytical enough to read a P&L, identify the signal in operating data, and know when something is wrong before it becomes a crisis — even if financial modeling is not your primary skil

Preferred Skillset:

  • Hands-on experience with ServiceTitan or comparable field service management platforms (e.g., Jobber, FieldEdge, Service Fusion); willingness to become a deep platform expert is non-negotiable regardless of prior experience

  • Experience working within a private equity-backed or roll-up trades environment — as a regional manager, operations lead, GM, or similar role — where standardization, data visibility, and multi-site coordination were part of the job

  • Familiarity with the economics of field service businesses: technician productivity, dispatch efficiency, service agreement revenue, job costing, and margin by service type
