Dandy is transforming the massive and antiquated dental industry—an industry worth over $200B. Backed by some of the world’s leading venture capital firms, we’re on an ambitious mission to simplify and modernize every function of the dental practice through technology. As we expand our reach globally, Dandy is building the operating system for dental offices around the world—empowering clinicians and their teams with technology, innovation, and world-class support to achieve more for their practices, their people, and their patients.

About the Role

We are establishing a new R&D and pilot production facility in Provo, Utah, focused on advanced ceramic and specialty inks for digital printing applications. We seek an Ink Chemist who is equally comfortable formulating new inks in the lab and working hands-on with inkjet printers. This is a unique opportunity to combine chemistry, materials science, and printing technology in a fast-growing innovation environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ink Formulation & Development

    • Design and optimize ink formulations (solvent-based, ceramic, and specialty inks).

    • Scale experimental recipes into pilot batches (up to 5 kg) while ensuring reproducibility.

    • Tailor ink properties such as viscosity, surface tension, particle dispersion, and stability to match printhead requirements.

  • Inkjet Printer Operation & Mechanisms

    • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot inkjet printers and test rigs.

    • Understand printer subsystems (printhead, waveform, drop formation, ink delivery, curing/firing).

    • Run print trials, capture print quality data, and feed results back into ink design.

  • Applied Research & Process Innovation

    • Conduct DOE studies to optimize color calibration, waveform tuning, and print consistency across machines.

    • Explore new pigment systems, dispersants, and solvents to expand ink performance.

    • Collaborate with engineering to adapt inks to different printheads and substrates (e.g., zirconia, metals, ceramics).

  • Incoming Quality Control

    • Perform incoming QC on inks sourced from vendors to ensure they meet required physical property specifications (e.g., viscosity, particle size, stability).

    • Document results and provide feedback to suppliers and internal teams.

  • Vendor Communication

    • Work closely with vendors to discuss formulation changes, improvements, and troubleshooting.

    • Ensure external formulations align with internal performance requirements.

  • Documentation & Communication

    • Keep precise lab notebooks, batch records, and experimental reports.

    • Present results and recommendations to technical leadership and cross-functional teams.

    • Support scale-up into production with well-documented methods.

    • Ensure compliance with lab safety, cleanliness, and chemical handling protocols.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • B.S. or M.S., preferably Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Printing Science, or related field.

  • Experience:

    • 2–5 years of experience in inkjet inks, coatings, dispersions, or printing technology.

    • Hands-on experience with inkjet printers and printheads (Seiko, Epson, Xaar, etc.).

    • Track record of bridging chemistry with machine performance.

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, surface chemistry, and particle dispersion.

    • Ability to troubleshoot jetting behavior, waveform settings, and print quality defects.

    • Comfortable in both laboratory and pilot production environments.

    • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with ceramic inks or dental materials (zirconia crowns, etc.)

  • Familiarity with color science, VITA shades, and calibration workflows.

  • Knowledge of FDA or ISO regulatory environments for medical/dental materials.

What We Offer

  • The chance to work at the intersection of chemistry and printing technology.

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.

  • A role with high visibility and impact in shaping a state-of-the-art ink lab.

  • Growth opportunities in a dynamic, entrepreneurial team.
